Good day fight fans! July was a tough month for the boxing community as we lost two of this era's biggest stars in Arturo Gatti and Vernon Forrest. Their contributions to boxing will not be soon forgotten. May their souls rest in peace.
August is almost halfway through and its time for my monthly Pound-for-Pound rankings. This month's list was shaken up a little bit by the loss of Vic Darchinyan who was knocked out of the list by Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko. Timothy Bradley also kept his undefeated slate to begin the month, but was his performance enough to make my list? Check it out below.
Most Recent Fight: May 2, 2009 KO victory over Ricky Hatton in 2 rounds.
Manny Pacquiao heads the list for obvious reasons. Pacquiao took the road less travelled coming from obscurity in the Philippines and working his way up and making a name for himself by defeating the best fighters he can find. He made the former linear 140 lb. champion Ricky Hatton, who was also undefeated in that weight class, look like a sparring partner. The victory solidified Pacquiao's claim as the best in the business and eliminated Hatton from any consideration of Top Pound-4-Pound billing.
What's Next? On again and off again, well it's looking like Pacquiao will finally get Miguel Cotto for November. Will Cotto's WBO welter belt on the line? I sure hope so as it will definitely add historical significance to the fight as Pacquiao tries to best Oscar De la Hoya and win his seventh divisional title. As far as the proposed WBC catchweight belt? Pacquiao might as well have someone slap him in the face because the belt to me is nothing but another cheap ploy by WBC to grab centerstage. That belt is worthless and why would Pacquiao want to be called a "catch-weight" champion?
